LGBT Youth and the Court System

Garry I. Bevel, Esq., is Jacksonville’s Children’s Ombudsperson. His role is to promote the best interests, non-discrimination, right to thrive, be heard, and participate for all Jacksonville’s children and youth.

Garry is the former Director of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Commission on Youth at Risk, Assistant Director of the ABA Center on Children and the Law’s Opening Doors for LGBTQ Youth in Foster Care project, and Deputy Diversity Officer for the ABA’s D.C. office. Prior to his time at the ABA, he was a litigation attorney for the Florida Guardian ad Litem program and Miami-Dade prosecutor. He is also a Clinical Law Professor at Florida Coastal School of Law.

In the community, Garry is the president of the board of PFLAG of Jacksonville, a non-profit LGBT advocacy and support organization; a volunteer Guardian ad Litem; an advisory council member and trainer for the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) All Children – All Families Initiative; a volunteer member of the ABA Commission on Youth at Risk; board member of the Jacksonville legal Center for Children’s Rights; and an LGBT Elders Competency trainer for ElderSource Institute.

 Garry graduated with a B.A. in English Literature from Florida State University in 2001 and J.D. from UNC Chapel Hill School of Law in 2005. He was named one of the Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40 by the National LGBT Bar Association.
