Dr. Beverly Brown has spent several decades as an educator, teaching students of all ages, grade levels and abilities in Florida and Georgia. She received her B.A. and Masters in Special Education from University of North Florida in 1985 and 1988. She completed a Doctorate of Philosophy – Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Florida in 1995. This allowed her to teach a variety of courses in multiple universities as she continued to provide direct service to students with disabilities. In 2007, she received a Juris Doctor from Florida Coastal School of Law and became a member of the Florida Bar in 2008.
Dr. Brown has written grants funded for technology, early college, and smaller learning communities, and designed and implemented programs for dropout prevention and small learning communities that are evolving and sustainable. In 2010, she was awarded an Equal Justice Works Fellowship in which she is able to provide direct representation to students with disabilities, educate parents and agencies that provide for parents and students with disabilities, advise the private bar in management of representing children with disabilities to obtain a free and appropriate public education, and recruit and train surrogate parents to enhance the educational outcomes of foster children. She has expanded the focus of her representation to cover 17 Florida counties and increased her representation of students with disabilities who have been arrested at school allowing her to work collaboratively with the Public Defender’s office. She continues to volunteer as an educational surrogate in her free time.
